Sub-micrometric structures replication
Injection moulding is a cost-effective technology that replicates into a polymer layer any defined tool structure. Sub-micrometrical structures replication in polymer injection molding is a very challenging issue due to polymer freezing problems when touching the tool surface.
To achieve it, special tools and process design need to be done using cutting edge technologies, for that purpose Erreka, with 55 years experience in injection molding, developed an induction variothermal tool plus coining capacities to inject these kind of microstructures, on its clean room injection molding area.
All this know how in tool and process design for these kind of replication have been a key to making the injection molding of laser induced periodic surface structures(LIPSS) in Medical or optical grade COC or COP material. This achieves a perfect replication of 400nm structures with 800nm period to get this example part, where we get different diffraction of light, resulting in colorization effects as a consequence of these sub-micrometric structures.
This technology is key also to getting injection molded parts with super hydrophobic or hidrophilic capacity.
